L’Hata yoga è la corrente più conosciuta dello yoga, probabilmente perché quella che meglio si adatta alla struttura e alle necessità psico-fisiche degli occidentali.
Assieme a Kundalini, Raja, Laya e Mantra yoga fa parte della corrente dello yoga tantrico, ovvero di quella corrente che sfrutta i sensi per giungere alla realizzazione interiore.
Le origini dell’Hata yoga risalgono alla stesura dei primi Tantra – i testi classici del pensiero induista in cui vengono annoverate le pratiche e le regole di condotta per arrivare alla liberazione – ma la sua sistematizzazione vera e propria si deve al mistico Gorakhnath, vissuto tra l’XI e il XII secolo, fondatore di uno yoga incentrato principalmente su pratiche psico-fisiche.
Nei suoi testi si teorizza che attraverso la rigida disciplina – sadhana – volta al dominio del corpo e al controllo della mente, può essere stimolata la fusione tra il sé individuale e il sé universale, meta ultima dello yoga.
